Dave's parents were here Sunday and Monday. So on Monday morning we took the kids to visit Santa Claus at the mall. Lucy remembers her visit with Santa last year and has been counting down the days until she could see him this year. In July we would walk by the empty space in the middle of the mall and she would say, "That's where Santa sits at Christmastime! When is Santa coming again?" When the decorations went up in November she got very excited at the prospect of seeing Santa soon.
Since there were three adults for this outing and only two kids, I decided we didn't have to take the stroller and Gus could walk. He knew he was really living large when we went up and down the escalators. The kids rehearsed what they would ask Santa for. When it was our turn, Gus got close enough to talk to Santa, but refused to sit on his lap. Lucy reassured Gus that she would ask for him again, just like she did last year. Lucy asked for a Belle costume and a Cinderella costume. She asked for Gus, too. Gus wanted a Buzz Lightyear costume and a pirate costume. I was holding him and told him, "Tell Santa what you would like." He put his left arm in the air and said, "Beyond!" (Buzz Lightyear says, "To infinity and beyond!") and then bent his right arm like a pirate and said, "ARGGG." The Santa was great, he was very chatty. Mrs. Claus gave them both coloring books. The kids sat on the bench and flipped through the pages, they couldn't believe their good fortune!
Then we went to Pottery Barn Kids to play for a half hour. Gus was in heaven! We've only let him out of the stroller once in there. He finally got to play with all the toys, just like Lucy. Gus loved the rocking horses, and Lucy loved the little phone. Then we went to Firebirds for lunch. Gus realized that he had been able to do so many big kid things, that he should continue to do big kid things. He screamed bloody murder when I tried to put him in the high chair. The battle wasn't worth it to me, so I let him sit on my lap. He colored and ate three lemon wedges. The kids were very good during lunch, and they both ate a ton of food!
