High as an Elephant's Eye
One of the things I love about living where we do is that it's city on one side of the road and then there's a farm with cows on the other side of the road. There's one farm we always pass that's within the three-mile bubble we live in. We look for the cows every time we go by to see if they're out eating or in the barn taking naps. The same farm has a big garden of corn growing. So everytime we pass, which is sometimes four times a day, we look at the corn to see how tall it's getting. Dave started saying in May "On the Fourth of July the corn will be as high as an elephant's eye." Needless to say, we had a Fourth of July countdown.
On the 3rd, the town of Morrisville had fireworks. We had no idea that they were going to have them then. Usually there's a big party at the end of June and that's when the fireworks go off. There was no party this year, so we figured that there weren't going to be fireworks. The fireworks are let off in the park that's less than 1/4 mile from our house and so we're able to lay in our bed and watch the fireworks go off. Gus and Judson slept through them, which is amazing. It literally sounds like bombs going off over our roof. Lucy got up and laid in bed with us to watch the fireworks. It was such a sweet unexpected treat.
We went to see Dave's parents for the 4th. We passed by the corn on the way out of town. The kids were thrilled to see the corn as high as a grown-up elephant's eye. We went to the pool on Saturday afternoon. Judson stayed in his seat and Lucy and Gus played in the kiddie pool for the majority of the time. Gus was a riot. That boy has no fear. NO FEAR. At one point, he was sitting in his floating crab and it turned over. He was probably underwater for a few seconds. When I flipped him back over he was laughing. Laughing! I was terrified. We had a cookout on Saturday night. I had been up since 4:30, so I took a nap around 7:30. Dave woke me up around 9:15, to figure out what we should do about fireworks. We decided to let Gus sleep, while Lucy and Dave went fireworks chasing. All three kids slept for most of the night! It was probably the best sleep we've ever had at Dave's parents' house! On Sunday we just lounged around and ate really good food. When we got home our neighbors were letting off fireworks in the cul-de-sac. Gus finally got see fireworks. He LOVED them. He's been asking to see them every night since. He'll just have to wait until January when we go to Disney. All in all, it was a great holiday weekend!
